One day, Dhunu and her friends come across some cricketers playing at a local event. She is fascinated by the band and their musical instruments, especially the guitar. She dreams of owning one herself, and forming her own dance band with her friends someday. But she is too poor to own a guitar. So, she and her friends make clay guitars and play on them.

(b) changing the positions of the doer of action and the receiver of action.

Ans: Styrofoam guitars are made by Dhunu and her friends. (स्टाइरफम गिटारस आर मेद बाइ धुनु एन्द हार फ्रेन्दस।)

(iv) Dhunu accepted her destiny. (धुनु एकचेप्टेद हार देसटिनि।)

Ans: Her destiny was accepted by Dhunu. (हार देसटिनि वाज एकचेप्टेद बाइ धुनु।)

(v) Dhunu and Bhaskar rescued their belongings. (घुनु एन्द भास्कर रेसकिउद दियार बिलंइंस।)

Ans: Their belongings were rescued by Dhunu and Bahaskar. (दियार बिलंइंस उवेर रेसकिउद बाइ धुनु एन्द भास्कर।)

(vi) The women of the village often scold Dhunu. (दा उइमेन अफ दा भिलेज अफेन स्कल्द धुनु।)

Ans: Dhunu is often scolded by the women of the village. (धुनु इज अफेन स्कल्देद बाइ दा उइमेन अफ दा भिलेज।)

10. (a) Here are two sentences. They are called complex sentences as they have more than one clause. A complex sentence has a main clause (i.e. a unit.that makes complete sense) and one or more subordinate clauses (i.e. units that depend on the main clause to complete their meaning.) Note the subordinate clauses that are underlined.

(i) Let us read about a young girl called Dhunu who wanted to be a musician.

(ii) Dhunu helps her mother when she is not at school.

Now note the following:

In the first sentence, the subordinate clause qualifies or is related to the noun Dhunu. Hence, it is an adjective clause. Adjective clauses are clauses that tell us more about a noun, and begin with who, which, whom, that, as, etc.

In the second sentence, the subordinate clause modifies the verb helps in the main clause. Hence it is an adverb clause. Such clauses begin with the following:

(i) when, before, until, since, then to express time

(ii) where, wherever to express place

(iii) that to indicate result

(iv) because to indicate cause / result

(v) so that, in order that to express purpose

(vi) if, unless to express condition.

(b) Find two complex sentence with adjective clauses and two with adverb clauses in the story. Write them down in your notebook. Underline the subordinate clauses. (फाइन्द टु कमप्लेक्स सेन्टेनसेज उइथ एदजेकटिभ क्लजेज एन्द टु उइथ एदभार्ब क्लजेज इन दा स्तरि। राइट देम दाउन इन इयर नट बुक। आन्दारलाइन दा साबअरदिनेट क्लजेज।) – सल’निफ्राय adjective clause थानाय मोननै आरो adverb clause थानाय मोन्नै Complex sentence लिर। Subordinate clauses नि सिङाव सिन बोनानै हो।

Ans: Adjective Clause:

(1) Dhunu is a ten year old girl who lives with her mother. (धुनु इज ए टेन इयार अलद गार्ल हु लिभस उड्थ हार मादार।)

(2) The musicians take no notice of the young children, who quietly fascinated by the instruments. (दा मिउजिसियानस टेक न नटिस अफ दा यं चिल्ड्रेन, हु कवाइटि फेसिनेटेद बाइ दि इनस्टुमेन्टस।)

Adverb Clause:

(1) Oneday, Dhunu asks her mother if she has money in the bank to buy a guitar. (वानदे, धुनु आस्कस हार मादार इफ सि हेज मानि इन दा बैंक टु बाइ ए गिटार।)

(2) The children’s fun is cut short as the monsoon months begin. (दा चिल्ड्रेनस फान इज काट सर्ट एज दा मनसुन मन्थस बिगिन।)

(c) Look at the complex sentences given below. Underline the subordinate clauses and say whether they are adjective clauses or adverb clauses (लुक इट दा कमप्लेक्स सेनटेनसेज गिभेन बिलअ। आन्दारलाइन दा साबअरदिनेट क्लउजेज एन्द से हवेदार दे आर एडजेकटिभ क्लउजेज अर एदभारब क्लउजेज।) – गाहायाव होनाय Complex sentence फोरखौ नाय। Subordinate clause फोरनि सिङाव सिन बो आरो बुं बेफोर adjective ना adverb clause.

(i) If it rains, we won’t have the match.

Ans: If it rains, we won’t have the match. (Adverb clause) (इफ इट रेइनस, उइ वन्ट हेभ दा मेच। (एदभार्ब क्लज)

(ii) I have read the books that are on the shelf.

Ans: I have read the books that are on the shelf. (Adjective clause) (आइ हेभ रिद दा बुकस देट आर अन दा सेल्फ। (एदजेकटिभ क्लज)

(iii) He creates problems wherever he goes.

Ans: He creates problems wherever he goes. (Adverb clause) (हि क्रियेटस प्रब्लेमस हवेरएभार हि गज। (एदभार्ब क्लज)

(iv) She hasn’t written to me since she left the place.

Ans: She hasn’t written to me since she left the place. (Adverb clause) (सि हेजन्ट रिटेन टु मि सिनस सि लेफ्ट दा प्लेच। (एदभार्ब क्लज)

(v) She is absent because she is ill.

Ans: She is absent because she is ill. (Adverb clause) (सि इज एबसेन्ट बिकज सि इज इ ईल। (एदभार्ब क्लज)
