Ans: The nature of the relationship between the captive and the young man is like a hostage and abductor. The captive had followed all the instructions ordered by the abductors. But there was an invisible bond between them because when captive was suffering from high fever at that time abductor took a great care of him. They were habitual of each other.
2. How does the captive come to understand the meaning of โFreedom Fightersโ?
Ans: As the abductors were not happy with the imperialist power. The laws which are enacted by the government are oppression for the abductors. The government which provides social and political security was illegitimate government for them and according to them breaking the law and order was their own kind of freedom and those who are working for them are freedom fighters.
3. How did the captive record his movement in captivity?
Ans: The captive record his movement of captivity in a notebook from the bag that he carried with him. From the last three months he was writing all the incidents in his journal. The Notebook was given to him by the abductors when he desired for writing journal. Since he was under Hostage for last seven months out of which he kept a record of last three months with a record of the time from his memory.
4. How did his abductors treat the captive?
Ans: The abductors treated the captive in a monotonous way. They keep on changing their location and habits regularly. They carry a gun with them which created the sense of fear from the captive. They always arrange for food and water for him. Even when the captive was suffering from fever at that time; they took a great care of him and arranged for a doctor.
5. Why does the captive feel that his abductor is also not free?
Ans: The captive felt that his abductor is also not free because every time a sense of fear was seen in them. They always used to be alert, guarding him with a lethal Weapon. They keep on changing their location from the fear of soldiers for which they need to cross the dense jungle mountain and rivers.

1. Comment on the significance of the title of the story. Does it refer only to the abductee?
Ans: The whole story revolves around the captive and the abductors. The captive who unwillingly becomes a hostage as he never felt that he will become a captive in his own Nation in the presence of law, order and security. He always had an impression of the world like free bird. But the halting situation realized him that the concept of freedom is not same for everyone. What is seen as freedom by the authorities is perceived as bonded by others. The story deals with the theme of basic human values which cannot be always evaluated in terms of politics and power. The way the bond between the captive and his abductor is portrayed shows that all things cannot be measured in black and white terms. Nor can all relationships be defined through political structures.
2. Write about the journey undertaken by the captive and the young man.
Ans: The journey encounter by the captive and the young man is divided into two phases. As in the beginning of the story, the captive and the young man are seen writing the bicycle together. But later the story turns into a. different situation where the boy find himself as a captive and the young boy who accompanied him was turned into the abductor. The life of the captive was tragically changed to few minutes when he realized that he was kidnapped. He lost the trust among the common people and the government for which he felt he was secure in his own Nation. Along with the abductors he travelled and crossed many dense forest rivers and forest.

1. Write a short note on Hare Krishna Deka.
Ans: Harekrishna Deka (born 1943) is one of Assamโs contemporary writers whose excellence in multiple genres is well attested by his works as well by the influence he has had on generations of readers and cre-ative practitioners his assured style and manner of exposition serving as the bridge between the Assamese greats of the twentieth century and the innovatively inclined writers of the present. As a man whose profes-sional career involved his service in Assam Police, Deka has now a substantial body of writings that showcase his intellectual bearings and adeptly reflect the transitional phase in contemporary Assamese litera-ture. Although he began writing poetry as a hobby while working on the police force, he later quit to become a writer. He was the Director Gen-eral of Police for Assam from 2000-2003. Harekrishna Deka is one of the most prominent poet-critics of his generation. He started writing po-ems and short stories since his student days. He was one of the most prolific writers of Assamโs Ramdhenu Era. He was awarded the Sahitya Academy Award for his poetic contribution in Ann Ejan in 1987, and he was awarded the Katha Award for his short story, Bandiyar (Prisoner) in 1995. After retiring as the DGP of Assam, Deka was the editor of the English daily, The Sentinel for brief period before serving as editor of the Assamese literary monthly Gariyasi.
2. Explain the ending of the story.
Ans: The story ends in a very tragic way. Everything happens suddenly at a blink of the eye. As like a usual day the captive was surrounded by guards. On that day he was asked to leave the bed and to move on the other place as the abductors were aware of the soldiers rescue operation. At the mean time the captive heard the sounds of explosions outside. When the abductor put the knob of the gun on his chest then he realized that the last moment of life has arrived. He heard many sound of firring but was amazed that he was alive as the firring was done but not on him. The soldiers rescued him at the mean time. Several soldiers rushed into the room and extended their hands to hiin. The operation was leaded by Captain Batra who paid homage to the dead body of the abductors.
