A Colourful Cultural Function
Guwahati- 30th September : A colourful cultural function was held yesterday in Uttar Kampeeth Mahavidyalaya, Jagara, The function which began at 3 p.m. was presided over by Shri Nagen Bezbaruah, Principal of the college. Besides students and teachers of the college, a large number of guardians also attended it. Stu were in large number participated in the function. There were songs, dances, recitation, mono acting etc.
The function began with a Bargeet presented by a Gitumoni Deka. It was followed by a Bharat Natyam dance presented by Manorama Baishya. Manorama Baishya has already learnt Bharat Natyam under the famous Guru Lilaboty Thakuria. Everyone praised her dance. Then shri Amrit Haloi recited a self composed poem. The recitation was not up to the mark but the poem was very good. This was followed by mono acting by Nabadwip Mahanta.
The audience roared with laughter at his comedy. Then it was the turn of the principal to deliver his speech. In learn and his not too long speech he advised the students to practise song, dance etc. which supplement formal education. The function came to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
2. A serious street accident.

A Serious street accident
Nalbari, 12 October : There was a serious street accident in front of Nalbari Natya Mandir at about 10.45 a. m. yesterday. A taxi (As – 25A-2919) hit a rickshaw so violently that the rickshaw was overturned. The two rickshaw passengers were thrown on the road. A passenger received severe head injury and died after a few minutes.
He was none other than the famous singer Balabhadra Pathak. He was going with his wife Smt. Radhika Pathak who was also seriously injured. A large number of people gathered immediately at the site of the accident and took the injured to the hospital. Though the rickshaw puller was also thrown on the road violently, he escaped with some bruises.
The police immediately arrived at the spot and arrested the driver. It was discovered that the driver was under the influence of intoxication. The unexpected death of Mr. Pathak has cast a spell of gloom over the area.
3. A football match between two School teams.

An exciting football match
Belsor, 3rd October : An exciting football match was played between Bongaon High School and Chandkuchi Milan High School at Bongaon yesterday. The match was kicked off at 3 p. m. Bongaon High School began dominating the game right from the word go. Haren Baruah, the goalkeeper of Chandkuchi SE High School team brilliantly saved two goals. The defence of, Chandkuchi High School team, was rather weak Arabinda Deka of Bongaon team gave a brilliant pass to centre forward.
Kushal Sarmah which he easily converted into a goal. Bơngaon team was leading one nill at half-time But in the second half it was a different story altogether. The Chandkuchi team began exerting pressure and pierced, through Bongaon team’s formidable defence more than once. The equaliser came in the eighteenth minute of the second half through a brilliant header by Dámann malla Bujarbaruah, the centre forward of Chandkuchi team. The match ended in one draw.
It was a neatly played match and there was not a single foul in the match. Shri Ananta Barman, the referee, also conducted the match ably.

An Exciting debate competition
Abhayapuri, November, 5th : A debate competition among the colleges of Goalpara and Bongaigaon districts was organised at Abhayapuri College on 3rd November. It was organised in connection with the celebration of Golden Jubilee of Abhayapuri College which was set up in 1955. Al together six teams with twelve participants joined the competition. Each team representing a college had two members, one debating for the motion and the other debating against the motion.
The motion of the debate was ‘Democracy has failed in India’. The speaker selected for the competition was Dr. Nabin Das, Honourable judge of Gauhati High Court. Miss Ranu Biswas ? Honourable Jus College moved the motion. All the representative debaters forcefully established their points. Audience listened to them with rapt attention. They highly appreciated the performance of each debater. The judges had a very tough time in awarding prize.
Ranu Biswas of Goalpara College, Balen Basumatari of Bijni College and Santi Ranjan Das of Bilasipara College were adjudged. first, second and third respectively. The best team award was bagged by Bongaigaon College. At last the motion was put to vote and passed in favour of the motion. The speaker highly praised the performance of the participants and remarked that the standard of the competition was so high that it could easily be compared with that of a national level debate competition.
5. Celebration of Independence Day at your School.

Independence day celebrated at Chabua HS School
16th August, 2008 : Independence Day was celebrated in Chabua HS School with much enthusiasm. Despite a boycott call given by some organisations, students in large number attended the function. Dr. Bhupen Barman, principal of the HIS unfurt the tri-colour. It was followed by the singing of the National Anthem. In his speech Dr. Barman dwelt at length on the contribution of Assam in the freedom struggle.
He called upon the students to be inspired by the immense sacrifice of the martyrs like Kushal Konwar, Kanaklata, Raota Kachari, Mukunda Kakati etc. He emphasised the point that Assam had been and will remain a part and parcel of India. Some teachers and students also emphasised the point that true patriotism only can make a nation great. The function concluded with the distribution of sweets among the children.

School week concludes
534 Mukalmua, 7th February : The School week of Mukalmua HS School which began on 2nd February 2008, came to a close yesterday with the prize distribution ceremony. Besides the students and teachers of the school, the entire locality was enthusiastic because Dr. Hiren Gohain, the ohain, the towering personality of Sam, had kindly consented to grace the occasion as the chief guest. Dr. Hiren Gohain needs no introduction to the people of Assam.
He is an eminent critic and a thinker per excellence. The meeting was scheduled to begin at 3 p. m. and Dr. Gohain arrived at 2.45 p. m. The principal, teachers and the students received him at the gate. The meeting began at 3 p. m. sharp with the singing of the college. The song composed by Md. Taher Ali, glorifying Mukalmua IIS school, was highly appreciated by the Chief Guest in his speech. Dr. Gohain in his speech urged upon the students to learn to value the age-old social values like tolerance, love, mercy, respect to elders, patriotism etc.
He warned the students about pseudo patriotism and chauvinism. Audience highly applauded his speech. In the president’s address, the principal of the college called upon the students to be inspired by the advice of Dr. Gohain. Mr. Hiranya Barman, vice-Principal offered vote of thanks. The meeting came to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.

A Quiz Competition held
Tihu, 22nd February : An inter School quiz competition was held in Tihu HS school yesterday. Altogether 9 HS School namely Nalbari HS, Bajali HS, Barma HS, Swahid Smriti HS, Uttar Kampeeth Mahavidyalaya, Mukalmua HS, and Hatibari HS participated the competition. The function way presided over by the principal of the host school. Noted Quiz master Shri Robin Kalita was invited to conduct the competition.
The standard of the competition was really very high. Questions asked related to Science, Literature, History, Geography, Sports and General Knowledge. But the participants were fully prepared. No sooner had a particular question been asked to the group concerned by the Quiz master than it was answered in no time. So the difference of marks obtained by different groups was very marginal. The Quiz master was very competent and conducted the proceeding very efficiently.
The audience also highly appreciated the competition. Bajali College bagged the first prize while the second and the third prize went to Uttar Kampeeth Mahavidyalaya and Barama HS school respectively. In his concluding speech the president highly praised the performance of the participants. “The performance shows how inquisitive our present generation is he remarked. Teachers, Day Celebrated
Guwahati, 6th September : Teachers’ day was celebrated at Nichols High School, Guwahati with much enthusiasm. Enthusiasm was noticed among students during the preceding among the themselves and rehearsing seriously for the fortnight of the event. Students were busy in collecting fund cultural function. The school auditorium was beautifully decorated and a cut-out of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was placed at the entrance of the auditorium.
The function was presided over by the Head Master of the school. Aurn Handique, a subject teacher, conducted the proceeding efficiently. The function began with a Saraswati Vandana’ presented by some students of class IX, A number of students spoke on the significance of the day.
They did not forget to mention that it is the birthday of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the great philosopher who wished that his birthday should be celebrated as the Teachers’ Day’ as he was a teacher himself. Then the teachers were felicitated with a phulam gamocha’, a Japi’ and a ‘sarai’. Student rise to the occasion
Guwahati, 6th August : This year Assam has been ravaged by several waves of flood. Almost all the districts in the plains have been adversely affected by the successive waves of floods. Students of Gopal Boro High School, Dispur has set an example of social service which should inspire other students. They decided to distribute relief materials to the flood victims in Nalbari district. They collected fund among the teachers and students of their school. They also went from door to door to collect materials such as clothes, food items, books etc.
Altogether twenty five students with two senior teachers formed the team. They hired a bus and set out early in the morning with the relief materials. But they had to abandon the bus at kalitakuchi choak. From there, was only a vast sheet of of water. They hired two boats there and when they arrived at Raghunath Choudhary High School, Laopara, near Mukalmua, it was almost noon.
About sixteen villages in the neighbouring area were still under water. Flood victims took shelter in the schools and colleges of the area. There were about two hundred and fifty people taking shelter in the school. The team. distributed the relief materials among the flood victims. The team returned in the evening each one with a heavy heart.

One-act play competition held
Kumarikata, 7th March : An inter school one-act play. competition was held in Kumarikata High School in Nalbari district on 5th and 6th March 2006 in connection with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the school. Altogether 9 high schools, namely Kumarikata High school, Baguihati High School, Jagara High School, Kakaya High School. Dwijendra Narayan High School, Raghunath Choudhary High School and Bartola High School participated in the competition. Ramesh Haloi of Kumarikata, Kamini mohan Sarma of Balowa and Ramesh Talukdar of Naptipara were the judges. The judges selected are veteran actors themselves.
Audience in large number enjoyed the competition on both the days. Shri Nani Deka of Jagara High School was adjudged the best actor (Puati Chair mat), while the prizes of the second best actor and the third best actor were bagged by Md. Isfakur Rahman; Raghunath Choudhary High School and Jayanta Deka, Bartola High School respectively. The best actress prize was bagged by Arundhuti Kashyap, Kakaya High School.
Sriman Arunav Barman, Bartola High School was adjudged the best child actor. Jagara High School bagged the best team prize. The prizes were sponsored by, shri Nilomoni sen Deka, MLA, Dharmapuri Constituency. In the concluding function Sri Deka gave away the prizes to the winners.

Drinking water Crisis
Guwahati 27th March : There has been a severe crisis of drinking water in the Narikal Bari area of Guwahati. People of this area do not get water supplied by Guwahati Municipal Corporation. As such people of the locality use the water of wells or tube wells for drinking purpose. With the increase in population the demand for drinking water has also gone up.
Construction of apartments in the area has added more population. As a result the water level has gone down considerably resulting in acute shortage of drinking water. Though the area was to be covered by water supply scheme of the Public Health Department. no one knows when will the scheme materialise. So the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. should come forward with a comprehensive plan to supply drinking water in the area.
