Ans: Taplow is the student of a teacher named Mr. Crocker-Harris who is very strict and a duty bound person. It is the last day of the school and the teacher is going to leave the school forever. In spite of that he gives Taplow extra work to do because Taplow had missed a day of school during the week due to illness. This is rather too cruel that Crocker gives the small child extra work to do when all the other children have left the school.
Taplow expresses his feelings to another teacher, Mr. Frank, who is totally opposite in nature to Mr. Crockes. Taplow says that Mr. Grocker is not even a sadist who is pleased to hurt others, but he is devoid of any feelings and is not happy to be liked by people. Besides, all other teachers tell the marks before the Headmaster’s declaration while Crocker never does so. Thus, in spite of his grudge against Crocker, Taplow does not dislike the teacher. He is not willing to leave without his teacher’s consent. So, Taplow understands the Teacher’s sense of duty and principles. And therefore likes and respects him.
2. Does Frank seem to encourage Taplow’s comments on Crocker?
Ans: As happens among colleagues the young Teacher is envious of Mr. Crocker Taplow’s teacher. Frank feels jealous to find that Crocker has such an effect on the students and gets everyone to do the duty sincerely. Crocker is very strict, stoic and full of discipline.

He maintains a respectable distance with his students and never becomes too open to them. It is the last day of school. He is a man of principles and very true to his duties, he expects the same to be instilled in his young students.
