1. What should education be all about, according to Albert ?

Ans: According to Albert, education should be based not on facts but on ideas. He said that one could get these facts from books. He was more interested in knowing why soldiers killed soldiers in war and not in knowing how many are killed.

2. Why didn’t Albert feel ‘cheerful’ to go back to his lodging?

Ans: Albert didn’t feel cheerful to return to his lodging. His room was in the poorest part of Munich but he did not mind the bad food or the dirt. He hated the atmosphere of slum violence. His landlady beat her children daily and her husband came back drunk every Saturday night and her up. The atmosphere made him sick.

3. What did Elsa think of Albert? 

Ans: Elas was Albert’s cousin. She told Albert that she was sure that he could easily pass the examination by repeating all that he had learnt in school. She also told him that she knew many students more stupid than Albert who got through the examinations.

4. How did Albert Einstein decide to get rid of his school? Explain.

Ans: Albert didn’t feel at ease in school. After his encounter with his History teacher, he decided to get rid of his school by producing a false certificate from a doctor who would certify that he had a nervous breakdown. It would serve his purpose as he would not be medically fit to stay in the school.

5. What advice did Yuri give to Albert before meeting Dr Ernest Weil?

Ans: Yuri told Albert not to deceive Dr. Ernest Weil. He should tell him everything clearly and frankly. He should behave honestly and formally.

6. Why did Yuri call Albert ‘the world’s worst liar’? Was he right in calling him so?

Ans: Yuri knew his friend Albert quite well. He also knew that Albert was a simple and straightforward boy. He wanted to have a false certificate from a doctor. But he didn’t know how to tell a lie. He felt so nervous when he went to get that certificate that he was really going to have a nervous breakdown. It was really a compliment that Yuri gave to her friend.

7. What did the head teacher tell Albert when he met him? 

Ans: The head teacher told him that he had become a nuisance for other students and teachers. He was not prepared to keep him in his school any longer. He was a great disgrace to the institution and wanted him to leave the school without any further delay.

8. Why did Albert feel the medical certificate ‘almost burning a hole in his pocket’?

Ans: Albert needed a medical certificate from a doctor certifying that he suffered from nervous breakdown, so that he could stay away from school. Albert had really worked hard to get the certificate from Dr. Ernst Weil. But now the certificate seems useless. It was almost ‘burning a hole in his pocket.’ He was being expelled from the school even before he could produce it to the head teacher.

9. How did Albert react to the head teacher?

Ans: For a moment Albert felt incited to tell the head teacher what he thought of him and his school. Then he checked himself and didn’t say even a single word. Holding his head high, he went out with a sense of pride. His silence showed his resentment and dislike for the school and the teachers.

10. How did Albert leave his school where he had spent live years?

Ans: Albert left his school without any regrets. He, in fact, left it arrogantly. He had no soft feelings for it or for its teachers. He was completely disillusioned because of the ill treatment meted out to him by the head teacher. He didn’t turn his head to have even a last look at his school.

11. What do you understand of Einstein’s nature from his conversations with his history teacher, his mathematics teacher and the head teacher?

Ans: Even as a student who is very subordinate to his teachers, Einstein stands above his history, mathematics and head teachers in intellectual and mental levels. The history teacher stresses at memorizing things but for Einstein it is the ‘way’ of the historical facts that are more important and not the facts. Naturally, Einstein has a higher calibre than that of his history teacher.

But he has all respect for his mathematics teacher who acknowledges Einstein’s intelligence above his. The mathematics teacher has no ego problem and submits to what is the fact about Einstein. Einstein is all hatred for the head teacher who together with the history teacher embodies the unsuitability of education unsuitable for high caliber or naturally gifted boys like Einstein. Obviously, by their conversations with them Einstein shows that he is intellectually far above them.

12. The school system often curbs individual talents. Discuss.

Ans: ‘Albert Einstein at School’ fully proves the fact that the school system often checks individual talents. The history teacher stresses cramming of facts. This is not good for talented students like Einstein. He is interested in knowing the ’causes’, not the ‘facts’. So such school education is ridiculous for talented students. Naturally, Einstein invented ways and means to circumvent such a system by getting a certificate from Dr. Weil.

Taken at its face value such a system causes real nervous breakdown to students of Einstein’s intelligence. The head teacher is also the spokesperson of such a hopeless school system. He does not mince words but expresses his wish straight to Einstein that he leave the school before he expel him due to indiscipline. The head teacher doesn’t introspect into the whole situation as to why such a situation has cropped up. Such a system is not meant for students of Einstein’s mental calibre. It simply curbs their talents.

13. How do you distinguish between ‘information gathering’ and ‘insight formation’?

Ans: The distinction between information gathering and insight formation is best revealed in the dialogue between the history teacher and Einstein. Knowing when certain things in history occurred is simply information gathering. It amounts to tabulating or memorizing things and doesn’t help in the formation of one’s insight or intellect.

But when one goes a bit deeper and tries to know the reasons, it is insight formation. Einstein is interested not in ‘facts’ which is another name for ‘information’. He is interested more in ‘ideas’ that lie behind this sort of information ‘insight formation’. The real system of education should not be information gathering but insight formation. It is the ‘insight’ that is needed to make one’s personality as a human being fully developed. It should be the real objective of school, college or university education.
