Ans: Mrs. Fitzerald advises Mrs. Pearson that she should be the mistress of her own house and the boss of her family. It is easier said than done. Mrs. Pearson is fond of her husband and children. It is true that they are thoughtless and selfish. It is very difficult to annoy them. She doesn’t know how to tackle them.
3. How do Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Fitzerald exchange their Personalities?

They call him pompy ompy person because he is slow and pompous. He loses his temper and glares at her. Mrs. Pearson threatens to slap his big fat silly face. George reconciles in the end.
7. Why does Mrs. Fitzerald (actually Mrs. Pearson) press for changing back to their real personalities?
Ans: The real Mrs. Pearson (now Mrs. Fitzerald) can’t bear the drama any more. The dose is too strong and bitter to be swallowed. She feels that her husband and children are really miserable. After all, they are not Mrs. Fitzerald’s “husband and children.” She can’t stand it any more. They must change back and come to their real selves.

Ans: J. B. Priestly has titled his one act play ‘Mother’s Day’. The title conveys a message. Husbands and children must respect wives and mothers in their families. They must not order and keep them running all the time doing one work or the other. Mrs. Pearson with Mrs. Fitzeralds help succeeds ins setting her spoiled children and husband right. The mother carries the day and wins over all the members of the family to her side.

Ans: Mrs. Pearson is a woman who has motherly instincts to the maximum. She is submissive, docile and is like a humble servant to her husband, her son Cyril and daughter Doris. Also she can’t change then so that they should help themselves first and then her in the domestic chores.
She talks about it to Mrs. Fitzerald her neighbour who is the opposite of Mrs. Pearson. She has a knowledge of some magic which and her husband learnt in the east. She makes Mrs. Pearson to change their bodies. By being assertive and strict as a mother should, Mrs. Fitzerald in the personality of Mrs. Pearson brings George, Doris and Cyril round., They became respectful obedient and sincere children. Mrs. Fitzerald doesn’t use any magic trick but only talks and makes Mrs. Pearson the mistress of the her own house and the boss of her own family’.
11. What are the real issues that Mother’s Day deals with? How does it resolve these?
Ans: The play ‘Mother’s Day’ deals with issues like exploitation of the female sex, absence of equal rights and duties, gender bias and woman empowerment. Mrs. Pearson sits at the center of the play being the victim of all these. Mrs. Fitzerald is the voice of woman freedom, asserting women’s rights through awakening towards discrimination at family, social or national levels.
Mrs. Pearson works twenty four hours by being at the back and calling her husband. They treat her like a machine and never care for her. She changes them to their real places through the magic help of Mrs. Fitzerald. Mrs. Fitzerald only needs to talk harshly in showing what is and what should be and they crack at once. Mrs. Pearson gets her rightful place as a mother in her family and others realize what and how they should be. This change involves all these issues and directly or indirectly supports these.
12. Describe the meeting between George and Mrs. Pearson (as Mrs. Fitzerald)
Ans: George enters his usual self thinking that his wife Mrs. Annie Pearson, would be at his beck and call But he is amazed to see her drinking stout. He says he won’t need tea as he is having a special snooker match at the club followed by supper. She wonders at George who is annoyed that she doesn’t bother to give him tea that he doesn’t want, she asks him to repeat it all the club and see what he gets, she tells him that people at the club call him Pompy ompy pearson because they think he is slow and pompous. Even Cyril admits it. George is horrified to hear it.
When he re-enters he is surprised to see Mrs. Fitzerald (Mrs. Pearson). He is aghast when she calls him George. Mrs. Pearson asks him coldly if he thinks he is the duke of Edinburgh. Grorge wants Mrs. Fitzerald to excuse them as they are at sixes and sevens. Mrs. Pearson tells coldly that next time a neighbour comes he should behave nicely, Grorge feels intimidated and wonders that either he is off his mind or they are. He calls her tiddly which makes Mrs. Pearson start up savagely at him. At last he surrenders and is a changed person.
