1. Why did Joe Morgan stand waiting for Andrew Manson at midnight?
Ans: It was nearly midnight when the young doctor Andrew Manson reached Bryngower and found Joe Morgan waiting for him. Joe and his wife had been married for twenty years and now they were expecting their first child. She needed immediate medical help before time. Joe’s face expressed relief at the sight of the doctor.
2. Why did Andrew say to the old lady ‘Don’t fret, mother, I’ll not run away?
Ans: The old lady was Morgan’s mother. She was wise in experience and realized there must be ‘a period of waiting’. She feared that the doctor might leave the case saying he would return later. The doctor assured the old woman that he wouldn’t run away. He would remain until everything was over.
3. Why did Andrew Manson hesitate and why was he torn between two desires?
Ans: Andrew Manson was in a state of conflict. He hesitated to move forward. Actually, he was torn between two desires. His first desire was to attempt to save the child. On the other hand, he had his obligation toward the mother also. She was herself in a desperate state. He was in a dilemma.
4. How did Andrew Manson solve the dilemma?
Ans: The dilemma before the doctor was whom to save first the mother or the child. It was so urgent he gave the child to the nurse and turned his attention to Susan Morgan She lay collapsed and almost pulseless. It took him only an instant to inject the medicine. After a few minutes of feverish efforts he succeeded in saving Susan Morgan.
5. What treatment did the doctor use in the case of the child and with what effect?
Ans: The doctor laid the child upon a blanket and began the special method of respiration. He took two basins and like a crazy juggler he plunged the child into the cold water and then into the hot water alternately for fifteen minutes. After labouring in vain a sense of defeat pressed on him.
6. How did the nurse and the old woman react when they heard the child cry?
Ans: The doctors frantic efforts succeeded in giving a new lease of life to the child. He gasped and his limbs were no longer boneless. His colour was slowly turning pink. Then finally the child cried. The nurse sobbed hysterically and thanked God. The old woman stood against the wall, praying. The child’s mother was not fully conscious.
7. How did Joe Morgan feel when the doctor came out?
Ans: The doctor went downstairs. Outside he found Joe standing on the pavement. His face was tense but expectant. The doctor disclosed that everything was fine. Both the mother and the child were safe and sound. Joe heaved a sigh of relief.
8. “Oh God! I’ve done something real at last.” Why did Andrew utter such words?
Ans: The doctor had done his duty. He had saved two human lives. The mother had collapsed. He saved her first. Then he saved the limp child by giving him a special respiration. After frantic efforts he succeeded in saving the child which was indeed a miracle. He thanked God and felt a sense of relief. He was satisfied that as a doctor he did something real at last.
9. Justify the title.
Ans: The whole episode revolves round the birth of a child. First the doctor saved the expectant mother who had collapsed. Then he saved the child who was thought to be stillborn. The doctor made frantic efforts to give a new lease of life to the new born child. So the exception has been given quite a suitable and sensible title.
10. Andrew literally fought with death to bring life to the child. Explain the statement.
Ans: The child born to Morgan’s wife was stillborn. Before Andrew Manson could help to resuscitate it, he saw its mother collapsed, almost pulse less. He at once gave an injection to her and she responded. After that, he asked for two basins of hot and cold water. It was a special method of respiration. He dipped the lifeless child method of respiration. He dipped the lifeless child into these feverishly. But the child lay lifeless. He felt a sense of defeat.
In one last effort, he rubbed the child with a rough towel and crushed and released the little chest with both his hands. And then as by a miracle the small chest began to heave. The sense of life springing beneath his fingers made him almost faint. But he redoubled his efforts. The child was gasping now, deeper and deeper. The child’s blanched skin was slowly turning pink. The child finally cried when life came to it. So we see how Andrew literally fought with death to bring life to the child.
11. “There lies a great difference between the textbook medicine and the world of a practicing physician. Discuss.
Ans: ‘Birth’ Surely shows and proves the difference between the textbook medicine, that is, ‘theory’ and the world of a practicing physician, that is ‘reality’. Textbook medicine is more based on assumptions, symptoms and things away from the harsh realities of life. So these theoretical aspects may not always be there in life which is always changing. Andrew is present when Joe Morgan’s wife is going to deliver.
When he waited for long, he perceived he may begin his work. His doing so is more due to the pressing situation based on reality. Then his persistent efforts for half an hour to revive the stillborn child show this difference. After ten or twenty minutes, theoretically he could have given up. But his remembering Joe Morgan’s mother’s longing for a grandchild elevates him to a level above the theory and he continues to fight for bringing life to the stillborn child. Andrew’s being a man who accepts challenges implies his being more on the side of a practicing physician than a physician caring only for textbook medicine.
