Q.1. What kind of teachers did Margie and Tommy have?

Ans. Margie and Tommy were taught by mechanical teachers. These teachers worked like machines and appeared on a screen at a fixed time every day except Saturdays and Sundays. The machine had separate sections for lessons, could check their homework, and calculate their marks automatically.

Q.2. Why did Margie’s mother send for the County Inspector?

Ans. Margie kept getting poor marks in geography tests, and her performance was getting weaker day by day. Her mother felt that something might be wrong with the mechanical teacher. So, to find out the problem, she called the County Inspector.

Ans. The County Inspector arrived with a toolbox filled with wires and instruments. He opened up the mechanical teacher and examined it. After working for about an hour, he fixed it and set it back in place. He explained that the fault was in the geography section—it was programmed too fast. Ans. Margie kept scoring poorly in geography because her mechanical teacher was giving her continuous tests, and the level was too difficult for her. The County Inspector discovered that the geography part of the machine was set too fast.

Q.1. What are the main features of the mechanical teachers and the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story?

Ans. The mechanical teacher is not like a human teacher. It is a machine like a robot. It has a screen on its body. Lessons and answers to questions given as homeworks appear on the screen. It has different slots or sections for various subjects. Lessons are shown and questions are asked through the screen. During the days of Margie and Tommy, around the year 2157 such teachers are called regular teachers. Home works are

inserted in a particular slot through punch code. The mechanical teachers some times developes some defects and they are repaired and restored by the county Inspector. For example once Margie’s mechanical teacher developed trouble in its geography section. The county Inspector was called in and he restored it. So was the case with Tommy’s teacher. It’s history section had blanked out fully and it was taken away for about a month or so.

The mechanical teachers are on always at the same time everyday except Saturday and Sunday. As for the classrooms of Tommy and Margie, they are in their house itself. Margie’s classroom is only next to her bedroom. In such classrooms one and single student is taught by a mechanical teacher.

Q.2. Why did Margie hate school?  Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun?

Ans. Margie always hated school. The mechanical teacher was giv-ing her test after test in geography and she was doing worse and worse. She was displeased with it, so she hated school.

Margie thought that the old kind of school’ that was there during the time of her grandfather’s grandfather was better than the one of her time. In old school kids of the entire neighbourhood gathered together and read in the same classroom. They came to the school courtyard laughing and shouting. Because they were taught the same thing by the hu-man teacher they could help one another with the homework and talk about it. For these things of the old school Margie thought that the old school must have been a fun.

Q.3. Do you agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans. Yes, I think that the schools today are more fun than the schools in the story. The following are the reasons that will justify why and how schools of today are more fun than the schools in the story.

The first reason is that schools today are held in building or build-ings. Students gather and learn lessons together. Students of same age are taught the same things. In the schools of today students meet each other and enjoy company of fellow students. They are given same home-work and they can talk about it and help each other. Besides, in today’s schools lessons are taught by human teachers. Students may talk to the teacher and get answers to questions given in speech and words.

On the other hand schools described in the story look strange. The classrooms are in the houses of the students. The mechanical teachers operated through punch code reflect the lessons and questions and answers in the screen on its body. It cannot talk like a human teacher. Besides the students are to learn alone in a small room and they miss the company of their fellow students. For these reasons schools of today are more fun than the schools in the story.
