Saint Peter, tired and hungry, asked her to give him one cake. The woman made three small cakes, each smaller than the last, but each time she felt it was too big to share. Seeing her greed, Saint Peter became angry and cursed her. He turned the woman into a woodpecker, and she flew out of the chimney. All her clothes burned except her red cap, and her body became black like coal. From then on, she had to live in trees and find her food by pecking into dry, hard wood. That is why, even today, woodpeckers are seen boring into tree trunks for food.
