Ans: The conductor offered Valli a cold drink. Valli declined. She frankly said that she had no enough money. The conductor said that would be his treat. But Valli firmly declined the offer. This shows that Valli was a self respecting girl.
12. What happened when Valli reached home after the bus ride?
(बास गाखोनायनि उनाव भेल्लिया न ‘मोनफैब्ला मा जादोंमोन ?)
Ans: After having a bus ride, Valli reached home. She found her mother awake. She was talking to one of Valli’s aunts who was a real chatterbox. She went on talking and talking. She asked Valli where she had gone. Valli did not reply, just smiled.
13. Describe the inside and outside of the bus?
(बासनि सिं आरो सानि नुथाइखौ बिजिर ?)
Ans: The bus was a new one. Its inside shone like silver. The seats were soft and comfortable. Above the windscreen there was a beautiful clock. Its outside was painted. It had a shining white colour with some green stripes along the sides.
14. What made Valli sad? Why didn’t she want to look out of the window anymore?

Ans: Valli was sad to see the dead cow on the road on her return journey. It was the same cow which Valli met on the way to the town. The horrible scene of the dead cow dampened her enthusiasm. So, she no longer wanted to look out of the window.

Ans: Valli agreed to what her mother stated about general things. Valli’s aunt reacted. She called Valli a chit of girl. She took interest in things that did not concern her. She behaved as if she were a grown lady. Valli smiled to herself. But she did not want them to understand her smile.
Long Question Answer
1. What did Valli see on her way back home? How did she react?

Ans: Valli did not get down from the bus. She continued to sit on the same seat and made her return journey on the same-bus.
But suddenly she saw a young cow lying dead by the roadside. It had been struck by some fast moving vehicle. She asked the conductor if it was the same cow that had run before their bus carlier.
The conductor nodded his head. Valli was overcome with sadness. The scene of the dead cow haunted her. She no longer wanted to look out of the window. She sat glued to her seat until the bus reached her village.
2. Describe how Valli reacted to the elderly man and woman in the bus?
(माबोरै भेल्लिया बासाव बैसो जानाय हौवा आरो हिनजावनि फारसे फिनजाथाइ जादोंमोन ?)
Ans: One spring afternoon Valli got into the bus to the town. She wanted to see the scene outside. But the canvas blind of the bus covered the lower part of her window.
So, she stood up on her scat. Suddenly an elderly person asked her not to stand up calling her ‘child’. Valli got angry. She replied proudly that she was not a ‘child’ and she paid the full fare. again, an elderly woman entered and sat beside her. She told Valli that it was not proper for her to travel alone. She asked Valli about her house. Valli replied that she needn’t bother about her. Then she turned her face towards the window.
3. What did Valli long for? What did she do to fulfil her desire?

Ans: Valli was eight years old. She wanted to know about many things. She had no playmates of her age. Her favourite pastime was to stand in the front door way of her house and watch what was happening outside. A bus ran from her village to the nearest town. She developed a strong desire to ride the bus.
Gradually, she began to long for the bus ride to the world outside. Soon she started to put her desire in action. She collected every details of the bus. She thriftily had saved up the charm of buying peppermints, toys, balloons etc. She also finalised the time of her bus journey and one afternoon she boarded the bus to the town.
