Thinking about the poem
1. Read the poem again and work in pairs or group to do the following tasks.
(खनथायखौ फिन फराय आरो गाहाइनि खामानिखौ मावनो जरायै एबा हानजायै खालाम।)
(i) Find the words that describe the movements and actions of the tiger in the cage and in the wild. Arrange them in two columns.

(ii) Find the words that describe the two places, and arrange them in two columns.

What do you think is the effect of this repetition?

Ans: The effect is clear. Importance of ‘brilliant’ is stressed here. It also brings a vivid images of the eyes of the tiger as of the shining stars. The brilliant eyes of the tiger look like the shining stars.
3. Read the following two poems – one about a tiger and the other about a panther. Then discuss :

The Tiger
The tiger behind the bars of his cage growls,
The tiger behind the bars of his cage snarls,
The tiger behind the bars of his cage roars. Then he thinks.
It would be nice not to be behind bars all
The time
Because they spoil my view
I wish I were wild, not on show.
But if I were wild, hunters might shoot me.
But if I were wild. food might poison me.
But if I were wild, water might drown me.

The Panther
His vision, from the constantly passing bars,
has grown so weary that it cannot hold
anything else. It seems to him there are
a thousand bars; and behind the bars, no world.
As he paces in cramped circles, over and over.
the movement of his powerful soft strides
is like a ritual dance around a centre
in which a mighty will stands paralysed.
Only at times, the curtain of the pupils
lifts, quietly, an image enters in.
rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles,
plunges into the heart and is gone.

Ans: Zoos are the safe-heavens of some species of animals. Therefore, these are necessary for the protection or conservation of the animals that are on the verge of extinction.
The sole reason is that due to rapid urbanisation and industrialisation their habitats are shrinking and their lives are endangered. Moreover, they are being killed by the poachers for trades etc. Because of this mindless killings, many wild species of animals have already been in danger of extinction.
Extinction of animals affects the ecological balance of nature. If the balance is not maintained, life will be in jeopardy. Zoos are useful in educating the public because the public become aware of them and thereby know the usefulness of animals to human life.
No alternatives are these to zoo. Because it becomes well night impossible to save the animals except the zoo. reserves or national parks.
4. Take a point of view for or against zoos, or even consider both points of view and write a couple of paragraphs or speak about this topic for a couple of minutes in class.

Ans: There are umpteen of reasons why zoos are necessary and why they are unnecessary. But the reason favouring them out numbers.
Many species of them have already gone extinct. Proper care can be taken of the birds and animals in zoos. Trained persons look after them and so they can live free life.
Zoos are not important. Nature has provided all the necessary arrangements for the animals and birds for the animals and birds to live and grow. A zoo can not provide natural environment to the, birds and animals.
